Christmas is my favorite holiday. By far. It is the only time of year when our family is guaranteed to be together for any extended period of time. Festive lights. Great excuses to talk to complete strangers. Hustle and bustle of shopping (not always a positive). Wrapping paper. Giving and giving. Oh and then of course food, cookies, and chocolate. Many other things should be included in this list but how long do you really want to be here reading this?
This year we added Virginia and Kenneth getting engaged to the fun events at Christmas.
This Christmas we made many happy memories together as a family. We were together for most of a week. That is rare. My mom calls our house an airport. We come and go so often and we can rarely “count to 9.” Now we count to 12 with a wife, a fiancé, and a girlfriend.
Stephen is in the next room. He doesn’t eat well sitting up so he doesn’t join us at the table.
Because of schedules and other families to consider we weren’t all together until Thursday night after Christmas. Even then most of us were together on Christmas Day which almost doesn’t happen anymore.
Christmas evening our church family got together for games and snacks in our shop. There are lot of people in our church that don’t have a lot of family to celebrate with. A couple of those families host whoever wants to come from the church and community. This happens at Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is what community is all about.
A lot of games get played at the 4210 Kinsman Rd during the holiday season. If we are together as a family we are guaranteed to have IBC Root Beer, Cashews, Shrimp, and Games oh and Pepsi now that Desiree is a part of the family. We started playing games Saturday before Christmas and kept playing until New Year’s Day. Every day all day unless we were eating, sleeping, or opening presents. Games.
I have 5 brothers. 4 of them love to play long strategy games. I’m sure if Stephen was able, he would join them. They sit for hours and hours playing Risk, Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, and anything else that involves a lot of statistical probabilities.
With 11 people to play games there are normally at least 2 3-4 person games going at once. Rook is an old one we still pull out sometimes.
Sometimes it gets a little out of hand.
We love each other. We fight well and play well. We’d do anything for each other.
Presents are always a fun part of our Christmas too. We love giving presents. It’s all about trying to figure out what the person wants or needs. We have a shared Google Doc with everyone’s lists so no one has to sneakily ask around. It’s usually a well kept who has whose name. (grammatically correct? not sure. don’t really care)
Gag gifts and weird wrapping are always a big part of presents. One year I got a bag inside a box inside a box inside a box inside a box.
Peace, Love, Joy, and Family.
Happy Birthday Jesus!
